Technology For Tuition

Nowadays, it is just as easy to watch an episode of your favorite show on your computer as it is on your TV. Most people have made the switch, to cut the ties with their cable company, and just watch TV on the Internet, with Hulu or Netflix.

My family considered doing this, but then we realized something: we do not watch very many shows. Sure, the TV is on a lot, but it is rare we are actually engaged with the show that is on. I have learned that sometimes, with 5 younger siblings, it is easier to wait a day or two and watch the newest episode of “Once Upon A Time” on my phone, instead of trying to watch it with people all over the house. We record shows, but usually it is just Disney movies that happen to be on Disney Channel or ABC, for my little sister. It is rare we actually record “adult” TV shows anymore, and if we do, we usually do not get around to watching them- at least not on TV. We like to have some show on, like “Chopped”, while we sit and talk.

Watching TV as a family is a favorite pastime, that I feel is starting to diminish due to Internet TV. Do families even spend time with each other anymore? I talk to my friends, and they are usually amazed that my family actually eats dinner together. We watch TV together, even if it is Disney Channel, or Food Network. TV can help with the awkward silence, or provide a topic of discussion. It is a time to interact with other human beings. But when someone just sits on their computer all day, watching Hulu or Netflix, then there is no human interaction.

I think being able to watch TV online is great, but it should not be the only source. We need more family time.
